It was hardly surprising to read that the Bahau assemblyman has rejoined the MCA after leaving the DAP two months ago.

The Negeri Sembilan DAP chairman Loke Siew Fook had rightfully demanded that the Bahau state assemblyman, who has quit the party, to do the honourable thing in resigning from his seat and re-contest it in a by-election.

However, I do not see this happening as some of our politicians are known to have no principles at all, a virtue they all claim to have when they are campaigning for votes. Worse still, when some of them, like frogs, jump from one party to another without any sense of shame or responsibility to the voters who had voted them into office based on the fact that they represented a particular political party which the constituents supported.

Malaysia aspires to be a developed country and is working very hard towards achieving it. In a developed society, the people expects transparency, accountability and the strict enforcement of laws. However, these instances are a rarity in Malaysia.

The people still remembers the antics of the close-one-eye MP, the senator who claims he could teach his son a thing or two about cloning APs, the local politician who constructed his palatial home in a poor neighbourhood and chose not to settle his assessment bills for more than 10 years and civil servants who had actually messed up the job entrusted upon them were given a transfer and a promotion to boot.

These actions and behaviour by some of these politicians and civil servants and the lack of enforcement by the local authorities are strikingly clear that we have a long way to go before we can truly claim we are a developed nation.
