Sex education: Teachers must be trained
I refer to the malaysiakini report Sex education: Teachers must be sensitive .
I say that the Malaysian government should not introduce sex education in Malaysian schools. It is not that the children are not ready. It is just that after reading the reports in local dailies, I think the people who are supposed to be the experts do seem to know what sex is.
The Selangor mentri besar quick to point out that some consider holding hands and kissing as sex.
With the present situation in the country where morality laws are so strict, the mention of sex is a high taboo. I am not confident at all that our present crop of teachers is competent enough to approach the subject in a serious and open manner. I do not think that they have even been taught to teach sex education.
I would like to appeal to the government to not be hasty in introducing this subject in schools just yet. I suggest that in the event the government is serious, it is essential to select matured, married teachers to be retrained specifically teach this subject.
