I refer to the recent comments made by our deputy prime minister blaming dredging works by Singapore for the floods which hit Johor recently claiming that a high build up of sand and sedimentation at river mouths along coastal areas in Johor was directly caused by the dredging works.

Perhaps our DPM should also have highlighted the plight of Malacca where massive ongoing sea reclaimation works have also raised the sand and sedimentation level of river mouths exiting into the Malacca Straits.

I wonder why and how such a project had ever been approved at the state or at federal level keeping in mind the seas and coastal waters are governed by federal legislation.

Malacca is not an island state and there is more than sufficient land available for the building shop lots, houses, mosques, churches, temples, schools or whatever without reclaiming land form the sea.

A drive through and around Malacca's housing areas and within the town itself will show the many empty unoccupied houses and shoplots, either fully completed or half-completed. The unused amount of land still available for any development project is huge.

I understand that the livelihood coastal fishermen has been adversely affected by this massive uncalled for reclamation project which, as usual, has already and will further benefit certain individuals within the political, municipal and corporate circle of corruption.

Malacca has begun to lose its heritage, its historical image and identity for the benefit of certain individuals within these corrupted circles. The recent flooding in Malacca clearly reflects the harvest of greed and corruption present in our society.

To my fellow Malaysians, I say to you exercise your power as citizens with rights enshrined in our constitution. Remember this when next you cast your next ballot. How long should we endure submitting ourselves to those to whom should serve but prefer to be served?
