I refer to the malaysiakini report RM32 million kickbacks: ACA confirm probe is on . Our mainstream newspapers, which are under the control of the executive, dare not publish this damming report against the Sarawak chief minister and it takes malaysiakini to highlight the issue. Kudos to you.

While decent Malaysians would welcome the ACA probe on the longstanding chief minister of Sarawak on alleged graft, one is not confident that the agency will be independent in the investigations and will work without fear and favour in this case.

Our ACA still needs its political master's approval before they can decide to recommend to the attorney-general to take action against big fish who have plundered state assets. The recent brouhaha about the former ACA chief who was alleged to have been involved in corruption and abuse of power doesn't speak well on the integrity of the agency.

The people's perception is that if the top honcho can be 'bought' than what about others down the line?

There too is the case of a deputy minister who was also alleged to be involve in some hanky- panky involving RM5 million. Why has the attorney-general - whose office has received the files on the former ACA chief and the deputy minister - failed to inform the public whether there will be any prosecution? Does our attorney-general have to seek the blessing of his political master too before making any decision can be made?

The chief minister of Sarawak is a very powerful political figure in the Hornbill state and one tends to wonder if the ACA would dare to recommend to the attorney-general to prosecute him if any evidence surfaced. Don't hold your breath as previous cases involving senior ministers Rafidah Aziz and S Samy Vellu all died a natural death.

Our country which wants to be a developed nation by 2020 seems to have weak leaders who abuse their power for personal gain. Presently, we have new government buildings in Putrajaya and a new judiciary complex in Jalan Duta suffering from water leakage, landslides and ceiling collapses. The funny part is nobody takes responsibility for these fiascos and life goes on as usual and the taxpayers continue to pay.

Thank God, we still have our oil revenue but one shudders to think of when the oil runs out. I weep for my children and grandchildren, who will pay for the sins of our present corrupt leaders.
