I did not know whether to laugh or cry when I read your report that the deputy internal security minister - who is under a cloud of suspicion himself for receiving a big bribe to release three notorious underworld figures from detention - had ordered a probe on our top policeman for a similar offence.

Presently, we have a former ACA chief who was investigated by the police for corruption and the present deputy internal security minister who was investigated for the five million ringgit bribe claim. It has been months now but the Attorney-General's Chambers is still unable to tell the public whether there will be prosecution in both cases.

The present IGP, whose contract was recently extended for a year, is our standard bearer of a person who is entrusted to enforce the law in this country. We would expect him to have a high standard of integrity with nary a whisper associating him with corruption or abuse of power for personal gain.

But then again, we have the former head honcho of the ACA and a deputy internal security minister - both of whom who should also be above board - who are alleged to have abused their power for personal gain. Whether the present allegations against the present IGP is true or not is not the issue.

Public confidence in the the integrity and honesty of these top officials is at an all-time low what with all the scandals and abuse of power by connected individuals who are still allowed to remain unaccountable for their misdeed which cause public coffers to be siphoned into personal pockets.

Even our prime minister seems to be in a denial state about the lack of moral values amongst his ministers and top officials. An opposition leader who had presented his office with a dossier on alleged abuse of power by one his minister was told it was 'still under study'. This is what you expect a leader of a Third World country to answer.

'You scratch my back, I will scratch your back' seems to be the mantra of our leaders who are not ashamed to abuse their power for personal gain. The top officials are not supposed to expose one another misdeeds as long as they don't trespass on each other's 'turf'.

It is payback time for deputy home affairs minister as he seems to be on a personal vendetta to demonise the police for going after him for allegedly releasing three thugs in return for cash.

Scandal after scandal has been exposed but so far no action has been taken against the culprits. We, the public, who are paying taxes should be more vocal in voicing out our anger rather than remaining placid and contented with all this abuse of power right from top down. Enough of this nonsense. Let's vote out of office those who are sleeping on their job in the coming polls.

We deserve the government that we get and it is about time we do something about it in the next general elections or face the consequences of becoming a failed nation as good as any other banana republics in the Third World.
