I refer to malaysiakini report Howls of protest over 'nab the dog' contest .

How could the Selayang Municipal Council came out with such a cruel and ridiculous idea? The competition will only encourage more cruelty towards homeless animals. The amount of money awarded is attractive and residents may be overzealous in catching dogs in any way they can. They may harm or injure the dogs and may use inhumane ways to get what they want.

Other than that, I also believe that this campaign will indirectly encourage people to go all out to steal dogs just to win the prize money. Dog-napping and cases of missing dogs are on the rise lately. Won't a 'competition' such as this only encourage this further?

A lot of animal lovers out there including myself strongly disagree with MPS' action. If it is talking about controlling the population of stray dogs, there are always better ways. We as Malaysians after 50 years of independence wouldn't want the world to see us as a nation that sanctions cruelty to animals.

The amount of prize money being offered should instead be spent on educating the public and spaying and neutering the animals. A lot of animal rescuers and lovers out there are doing this without funding and using their own money.

Bear in mind that there strays dogs are not born stray. They are left under the sun with no shelter and no food due to our own negligence. Hunting dogs for money. This is a big no-no. If we allow this to happen in our nation, then we should be ashamed of our nation.

Dogs are not 'haram' to Muslims. They are living creatures too. If only we teach our children and the whole nation to treat dogs and other animals as God's creations, then we can only improve as a nation. Please help the innocents.
