I am writing in response to Bonita's letter, [#1]Unfair to blame PM all the time[/#] (Dec 11), as well as all the reactions to Suqiu.

Like all the 'younger generation' of Malaysia, I was also angry about what happened to Anwar Ibrahim. Aside from the younger ones in my family, the rest are strong BN supporters. I have, on many occasions, argued with my Dad and other family members about the 'injustice' perpetrated on Anwar.

As I have been studying abroad for the last four years, I admit that I probably don't know much about what's going on in Malaysia, though I read Mahazalimtwo , malaysiakini and Utusan 'Meloya' religiously everyday. When I read that BA had won the Lunas seat, I was very happy that finally, the people have spoken.

Being a Malay myself, I have started questioning myself if Malays are really ready for such changes that we have been waiting for. We have been enjoying the benefits of hak istimewa orang Melayu (Malay special rights) so much so that we probably don't really appreciate its existence. Are we making full use of the benefits? We Malays are way too pampered and are just relying on those rights, but are we going to have it forever?

Dr Mahathir Mohamad could be bad in some ways, but he has also done a lot of good things for the country. It was because of him that my brother, my sister and I could pursue our higher education. I also have one lazy brother who is doing nothing right now, and it saddens me. My brother is part of the statistics of lazy Malays and I know that there are a lot of people out there just like him. " Masa depan sungguh kelam ..." - so goes a song I used to sing in high school.

I wish that the Malays will realise this and make the most of what we have. My goal now is to get my brother's lazy butt up and try to make him a more useful citizen. Once he is out of the way, I will try to help other people.

Our future is so uncertain, and I hope that the Malays will get up and face the reality. Putting myself in the shoes of the Indians and Chinese here, I too will get tired of being a second-class citizen!
