Sibu floods: What is happening?

As we read of the recent floods in several areas in Sibu, Sarawak, our hearts go out especially to the schools and students affected.
The Sun reported it as the worst flood to hit the town in 20 years. Are the river beds are getting shallower? Isn't it time to ask ourselves why this is happening? Where did the excessive soil erosion come from? What is being done to prevent such a flood from happening again?
