I read with great interest the article written by James Wong Wing On, [#1] 'The struggle of memory against forgetting'[/#] (March 2). Indeed, the article has re-established a proper "historical timeline and global space-scale" for many of us.

There was really a time in our modern history where Malays, Chinese and Indians fought together in politics for good values and progressive ideas. There was no compartmentalisation of races, and no racial parties. However, sponsored by British imperialism, Umno (1946), MCA (1949) and MIC (1946) came into being. Together, these three parties established a political system of divide-and-rule.

It is time Malays, Chinese and Indians work together again under non-racial parties to fight for common values of democracy, human rights and dignity, transparency, accountability and above all, freedom of speech, assembly and dissemination of news.

Said Zahari has sacrificed his whole life for the unity of the people and the attainment of true Merdeka. It is our task as younger Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans and Kadazans to continue to struggle for justice for all. I salute Said Zahari as well as James Wong for a story well told.
