I have this real mind-boggling question in my mind as to who should be a bumiputera and who should not be. I have many friends and have known people who claim to be Malays, Muslims and bumiputera as well.
By the mere fact that some become Muslims when they get married to Muslims, they tend to claim they are now Malays and bumiputeras. The funny part is that this is widely accepted in Malaysia (Malaysia Boleh).
Let’s take a classic example. The Selangor Menteri Besar Mohd Khir Toyo is supposed to be the first generation born here of immigrant Indonesian parents. I am sure he claims himself to be a Malay, Muslim as well as a bumiputera. How can he qualify to be an MB when an Indian, Chinese or any other race in Malaysia (except a Malay) is never chosen to be an MB?
So what rules are the Umnoputras playing by? I find it disgusting that we should tolerate this at all. How many million Indonesians are in this category claiming to be bumiputeras and getting all the benefits of the NEP and the poor non-Malays’ tax money.
Why shouldn’t the non-Malays who have been in Malaysia for many generations be bumiputeras as well? It is high time we abolished all this bumiputera status and regarded everyone as Bangsa Malaysia.
It is the same mentality when the Umnoputras say the word ‘Allah is exclusive only to Muslims when Christians in the Arab world has been using the word way before Islam surfaced. This is a show of arrogance by the Umnoputras who think they can make any ruling they like with no respect or regards to the non-Malay population of Malaysia. This is what they call Malaysia Boleh.
