I refer to the letter Sudden gov't benevolence election motivated .

Most elections bring out the silliness of politicians who know their votes are for sale. There is not a politician in the mix, anywhere in the world, who does not have a handy phrase that expresses his willingness to ‘work for you’. He sells this mantra day in and day out, except when he has obtained office.

I see it happening in Malaysia as well. Malaysians will always have to deal with an omnipotent BN until they realise that they are being sold down the river at almost every turn because there is no effective and loyal political opposition.

The BN tells Malaysians that to oppose the BN is ‘traitorous’. The opposition is stifled at every turn by some rule or edict that would not hold water in a society that has a credible opposition.

A credible and loyal opposition must rise above the petty racial and religious divisions the BN fosters. A successful opposition should place itself as a ‘shadow cabinet’ to monitor all the deeds and non-deeds of the real cabinet and report truthfully to the people. Such news may have to come through alternate means, such as Malaysiakini or blogs, but it will be effective.

Continuous squabbling by the potential components of a credible opposition only serves BN's aim to maintain total control over the Malaysian government and allows those ‘elected’ to work their way into the system to become so deeply imbedded that no matter how foolish they are, no matter how boorish, they obtain re-election.

Until there is a groundswell to change the status quo to show the BN that there is a loyal and effective ‘opposition’, I will remain disgusted by the scenes I see in front of me.
