I wish to comment on the news report entitled 'Universiti Kristian: wakil BN dicabar ulang di luar dewan' (25 April).

The use of Christianity as a bogeyman, whether by the government or opposition, is most uncalled for as it is a sensitive issue to the Christian Malaysians. We may be in the minority, but please respect our rights and feelings, too.

Besides, what is wrong with having a Christian university, large or small, for the benefit of tertiary education in Malaysia? Many people have benefitted from a sound education offered by Christian institutions in the past, whether at the secondary or tertiary level, in Malaysia and all over the world. Many continue to. Just ask those who had once graced the halls of such institutions and they would attest to it.

For the record, Christian Malaysians believe in promoting and applying good spiritual values and principles in life, nation-building, upholding the rights of the oppressed, marginalised and the underprivileged, upholding human rights and responsibilities, ensuring social and economic justice for all, fostering good interracial relationships, contributing to national economic growth; the list goes on. This is in line with biblical teaching.

We are not in the least 'unpatriotic'. We are not agents of foreign powers; Malaysia is where our loyalty lies with. We are neither a 'Western', 'Eastern', 'Northern' or 'Southern' religion.

So please do not make us out to be what we are not or paint us in a negative light, whether directly or by insinuations.

And, to the politicians, refrain from making statements which trample on our feelings and reflect your own lack of understanding of Christian Malaysians and Christianity.
