Good debate on Cuba
Whether Devaraj's letter 'Malaysia must emulate Cuba' (May 12) was intended by the writer as a political satire against Dr Mahathir Mohamad or as a piece of genuine communist propaganda, it has succeeded in raising serious debate on many issues, like economics and politics.
The ultimate winner is, in my opinion, malaysiakini and the idea it cherishes and defends: freedom of speech conducted in intelligent, articulate and rational manner.
Malaysiankini , which is alleged or insinuated by the powers that be as ultra-capitalist George Soros's agent, would now probably be condemned as a 'fellow traveller' of the 'communist united front' because of Devaraj's letter. But Malaysians have matured enough to know that one cannot be an American agent and communist simultaneously, just as Anwar Ibrahim cannot be a 'CIA agent' as well as an 'Islamic fundamentalist' as alleged immediately after he was sacked and arrested under the ISA.
Finally, I must record my gratitude to Devaraj for stirring up a good debate which he has paradoxically lost. Terima kasih .
