While many are condemning or at least critical of MCA and its president, Dr Ling Liong Sik, for attempting to gain control of the Chinese-language media, I would like, on the contrary, to express my heartfelt gratitude to the party, Dr Ling and Huaren Holdings Sdn Bhd.

For no other event in recent years has stirred the grassroots Chinese community to the core of its collective psyche than the threat posed by MCA and the Umno-dominated government to their cherished heritage and source of collective pride: the many independent, fair and impartial Chinese-language newspapers.

By going against the will of the Chinese community, MCA, Dr Ling and Huaren Holdings are actually making more Chinese reformasi-minded. Yes! MCA, through its arrogance, is strengthening the Chinese-wing of the reformasi movement.
