With or without Anwar, gov't will fall

I refer to Malaysiakini report Forensic team sweeps luxury condo .

Our police force seems to be super efficient in checking the sodomy allegation against the former deputy premier as compared to the high-and-mighty in the government. The last time a former cabinet minister was involved in an alleged sexual harassment case against a woman promoter at a five-star hotel, the incident seemed to meet with a deafening silence from the authorities.

While those who break the law should be held accountable for their misdeeds, one tends to wonder if the police’s breakneck investigations against the de facto leader of the opposition is to deny him the opportunity to claim the top post come Sept 16 at the latest.

It is an open secret that police reports against the government high-and-mighty will gather dust in the police stations while a mere allegations against an opposition member will land the victims into hot soup.

With Anwar Ibrahim lodging a police report against the IGP and attorney-general on the alleged fabrication of evidence in 1988, one wonders whether the latest sodomy charges against the former deputy premier is just a ‘red herring’ by those in power to put Anwar in a spot and divert the people’s attention from the abuse of power by the two powerful individuals in the government.

If the government thinks that what they did to the former heir apparent in 1998 can be repeated again this time, well, they are dead wrong. People are watching this current case with keen interest and even world leaders would want to know the outcome of this sodomy probe.

World opinion of our leaders would reach new depths if the sodomy charges were found to be fabricated to prevent the former deputy premier from reaching his goal of becoming the country’s next prime minister of Malaysia.

A Third World despot normally runs down their opponents like what Mugabe did to his rival to win the president’s post in Zimbabwe. Our leaders will use all the available government machineries to remain in office and past experience has shown us that the opposition parties with their limited resources face big hurdles against BN candidates during every general election.

Looks like an old movie is being replayed in this matter. The main actor, Anwar Ibrahim, has the leading role while the villains, who are the prosecuting officers of the previous sodomy trial, repeat their performances. Other minor actors are playing their role too. Maybe some film producer can produce a Malay movie blockbuster about this interesting case which can be a crowd puller at the cinemas.

The opposition parties will lose a great leader who can take our country to new heights if Anwar is convicted again on the same sodomy charges like before. The de facto opposition leader has overcome major hurdles in his political carrier to reach to the top and one thinks the latest allegation against Anwar is a desparate attempt by the powerful to silence him for a long time.

No major corruption or abuse of power allegation can be used against him so his personal lifestyle is used to bring him down by his political opponents. Whether Anwar is a sodomist or not, only the Almighty knows but under strict syariah law, we need four good Muslims to see the act before the person can be convicted.

A fair and transparent investigation into this high-profile case can only be done if the authorities allowed foreign agencies Scotland Yard or FBI to investigate this matter. With due respect to our local police force, their professionalism is suspected as the present IGP played an important role in the imprisonment of Anwar in the past.

Bad blood between both parties is still there and if the de facto opposition leader manages to helm the nation in the near future, the present IGP’s tenure will be terminated and his time in office will be investigated by the new government to look for wrongdoings (if any).

The present government is in a denial mode if they think that by putting the brakes on Anwar’s ascendancy to high office using sodomy charges, they can retain their federal seat until the next election.

The tide against the present government is at an all time high due to their inept leadership and with or without the Anwar factor, the government will fall. Maybe not in the near future but come the next general election, the weak present government will be in the annals of our history.
