I don't know if journalists are more gullible than Umno members. Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad asked former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin to help out when Anwar Ibrahim was sacked in 1998.

At the time, Daim was reluctant but he agreed apparently in the interests of helping the country, Umno and himself, not necessarily in this order. During this time, contracts and projects were awarded based on decisions made by the top leadership - a case of one for you and one for me, or maybe one for you and two for me.

Whichever the case, the file that Mahathir has on Daim is no less thicker than the file that Daim has on Mahathir's children and Mahathir's cronies.

So what makes everyone think that Daim will be arrested and put on trial?

There are several scenarios that may pan out in the next few weeks, but these do not include the scenario where Daim will be put in jail for his indiscretions.

The most likely scenario in my mind is that Mahathir will weep at the Umno annual general assembly this Thursday, about how you should not trust people like Daim, and will tell delegates that he made a big mistake in asking Daim to return to the cabinet in 1998.

Then he will say that following complains from the grassroots, he is ordering an investigation into Daim's assets, including that of Daim's wives and associates. Mahathir will say that whilst Daim was excessive in manipulating his position for personal gain, the assets were acquired legally and there is no basis for going after Daim. Mahathir will promise that he won't make the same mistake again. End of story. Mahathir will try to buy breathing space for another 12 months. In the meantime, Daim gets to enjoy his life devoid of public attention.

You can see that the script has been written. Let us wait for the end of the week for the acting to begin.
