I totally agreed with Ho Mun Wah that if we allow leaders to exploit issues like Nanyang Press, then we, too, are merely pawns of these leaders ('Nanyang issue exploited', June 20). The writer has the right point in that we should not let the leaders exploit the MCA members and the Chinese community as and when they wish. But I beg to differ on who are the exploiters and manipulators.

The president of MCA entered into an agreement to commit all the assets of MCA to buy Nanyang Press despite strong objections from almost all Chinese associations and guilds. Other than the issues of legality, lack of respect for the community, risk of the investment, he is betting all MCA's assets on one very risky venture. There was no proper due diligence (none has been presented yet). There was no proper discussion with the trustees of Huaren and other leaders of MCA prior to the signing of the agreement.

But I think there is one most important issue that most MCA members are not aware of. With this single move, the future of MCA has been pawned. MCA pledged all its assets for a 100 percent loan. Whoever has power or influence or is in a position to influence the business or financial position of Nanyang - such as renewal of printing permit - has the power to hold MCA by the nose.

The profitability and survival of Nanyang will be like a sword hanging on top of the MCA's leaders. It will affect the independence of MCA in the future; not just Nanyang Press! If the returns from Nanyang are insufficient to cover the interest payment or principal repayment, MCA will be at risk of bankruptcy. Thus, MCA would have to kowtow to whoever who has control over the fate or survival of Nanyang Press.

I must say this is an excellent plan. A well-thought trap. And the group of 32 endorsed it. Congratulations, MCA members! Your future has been pawned.
