I refer to your report entitled 'Nanyang vote regrettable, says Chinese lobby group', June 26) which said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad condemned those opposing MCA's takeover of Nanyang Press as promoting Chinese sentiments and Chinese 'special rights'.

In the four decades since independence, there has never been such a thing as Chinese rights, only a continual erosion of Chinese positions, thanks to the MCA.

The implication in the PM's sanctioning MCA's takeover of Nanyang is now very obvious: MCA is supposed to put a stop to these two issues of promoting Chinese sentiments and Chinese independent voice, continuing its role for the past 40-odd years.

This is also obvious from how MCA totally disregarded the views of the Chinese community in its decision. The surreptitious and hasty manner in which the deal was concluded adds weight to this view. How can MCA now claim that it is purely a cultural and business investment?
