I refer to the Malaysiakini report Aborted forum: PKR deputy lambasts own MP.

Dear Zulkifli Noordin,

As a Kulim voter fed up with the racist antics of Umno, I was naturally happy when PKR decided to field you as its candidate for the parliamentary constituency of Kulim/Bandar Bahru in the last general election.

At that time I thought that PKR had made the right choice in their selection of candidate. You, a lawyer trained from Victoria University of Wellington, NZ, was the urbane, modern and moderate Muslim, towering over the likes of a racist hooligan like Aziz Sheikh Fadzir, notorious for his threat to burn down the Suqiu headquarters in KL a few years ago when he was Umno Youth deputy president.

When you defeated Aziz on March 8, I together with the other Kulim voters were very happy not only for you, but also for PKR. We had high hopes in you as our MP in injecting a fresh air of moderation and multi-racialism to reflect the new politics of PKR and Anwar Ibrahim after all the racist politics of Umno, particularly in their stronghold of Kulim.

You were on the right track in opposing the federal government’s steep rise in the price of fuel and you aptly demonstrated this by riding your bicycle to parliament house together with your fellow PKR MPs like Tian Chua and Gobalakrishnan in symbolic protest. We were all so proud of you, our new MP.

Fast forward to the 300-strong protest demo against the Bar Council’s convening of a conference on Aug 9 to discuss issues relating to Muslim converts in order to find an amicable solution to their complex problems and what did we see?

Was that you behaving like a samseng leading a crowd of fanatics making all kinds of threats and intimidations to stop the forum? No, our eyes were not playing tricks on us. The camera did not lie.

And to add insult to injury, when you were interviewed by a reporter who posed his questions in English, you chose to answer in Malay. It is not that you don’t understand English, in fact, you were educated in New Zealand and can speak English perfectly.

You deliberately don’t want your remarks to be understood by many people abroad who don’t understand Malay because you don’t want them to know your extreme and intolerant views. You only want to gear your remarks to Malays and Muslims to incite them further against the Bar Council. You want to be an ultra-hero of Islam.

It is right and fitting that your party PKR has objected to your position even though you claim your stance to be personal. The hope of Kulim voters is that your party metes out stern disciplinary action against you. You did not even pause for a while to think that your outrageous behaviour would make Anwar vulnerable to attacks by Umno with the Permatang Pauh by-election just round the corner.

You have given Umno yet another dirty excuse to run Anwar down. In that way, Umno did not need agent provocateurs to run Anwar down. You are already by default one of their agent provocateurs, and a very good one too.

Don’t forget that the hearing of Aziz Sheikh Fadzir’s appeal against your victory in Kulim/Bandar Bahru on March 8 will be heard on Aug 19. The reason the judge postponed the hearing from an earlier date to Aug 19 was because they wanted to prevent Anwar from contesting in Kulim after Anwar had announced that he would be contesting in Kulim/Bandar Bahru.

That was why he was in a way forced to opt for Permatang Pauh to overcome Umno’s moves to stall him from taking over the federal government through defections by Sept 16. But with your boorish behaviour at the Bar Council forum, you appeared to have scored an own goal into PKR’s net – much to Umno’s delight.

The judge hearing Aziz’s petition would now be certain to disqualify you to pave the way for a by-election in Kulim/Bandar Bahru and everyone’s guess is that the Election Commission would try its best to time the election to coincide with the Permatang Pauh by-election to tie the hands of Anwar and PKR.

I’m sure after what you have done at the Bar council forum, the PKR would not select you as the candidate for the simple reason that many Kulim voters would find your religious fanaticism a bigger liability than Aziz Sheikh Fadzir’s crass racism.

They would find Aziz a lesser evil and Umno would get back the seat by default. PKR needs to retain Kulim/Bandar Bahru and it can only do that by fielding a candidate to undo all that you have done to alienate a lot of Kulim voters, both moderate Muslims and non-Muslims.

It is already too late to apologise now even if you do regret your action as foolish. The irreparable damage has already been done, and as far as the Kulim voters are concerned, you are already finished as their MP. They don’t want you anymore.
