I read LC Leong's letter 'Malicious Rumour - plot to destabilise party'(Aug 6) and really felt the need to reply to some of the points raised.

Firstly, I read with great fear and horror the writer's suggestion that Dr Mahathir use the ISA on the so-called MCA 'Gang of 8'.

This is totally against the principles of democracy, free speech and freedom of expression. Using the ISA on such a minor issue like this is morally wrong and would in fact give more credence to the 'rumour mongers' who allege that the leaders of the country have something to hide.

The ISA was established to deal with the very real physical threat of communist insurgency at that time. It is certainly not meant to catch each and every political detractor to the established government of the day.

If indeed Dr Ling or any other government leader has nothing to hide, then perhaps they too should declare their income to the whole country.

The statements that 'it is normal for politicians' sons and daughters to do business' and 'why can't their sons and daughters be allowed to enjoy a bit of what their fathers and mothers do not?' are very disturbing and point to the core of the problem with Malaysian politics: the politics of cronyism, nepotism, and self-profiteering.

There 'cannot' and 'should not' be a point where the ordinary rakyat thinks it is 'normal 'for politicians and their friends or family to 'enjoy' benefits from the politicians' position.
