In accordance with the fine tradition of 'foot-shootings' among our distinguished ministers and politicians, M.Kayveas has earned himself a place in the Hall of Fame. In the report 'DTC fire a sabotage: Kayveas' (Aug 15), he said that studying and investigating the matter himself, he concluded that the fire is a sabotage. But he stressed that government's findings cannot be revealed because they are still inconclusive.

Adding on, he questioned how a short-circuit could occur a day before the PM's visit. (How would an electrician explain to the court that a circuit cannot be charged for contempt, i.e. not respecting visiting dignitaries, and should only short themselves at appropriate times. The Fire and Rescue Services Department should advise our leaders on these matters).

By saying that it was a sabotage, he must be implying that the security procedures for the PM's visit to Universiti Malaya were not properly supervised. The police must be taking the PM's security very lightly that they did not even bother to secure the place a day before his visit, allowing saboteurs through. Tan Sri Norian Mai should be reprimanded for this blunder. Or better still, sacked.

Who could blame our deputy minister for housing and local government, M Kayveas for being disgusted and frustrated with the 'incompetent' Fire and Rescue Services Department, the Chemistry Department and the police who, entrusted to investigate the fire, submitted an inconclusive report. As the responsible deputy minister that he is, he has to investigate and study the case himself.

I am proud of the deputy minister for going through every inch of the charred building himself to collect evidence, leading by example... or was he investigating from his air-conditioned office in Putrajaya?

And for a minister to submit to the Cabinet an inconclusive report while his deputy (Kayveas) was still investigating the case, it tells a lot about the minister too. He should have consulted his deputy first. Shame on you, Ong Ka Ting.

The Cabinet did a wise thing in not revealing an inconclusive report tabled to it and should instead allocate more funds for training purposes and procuring equipment so that the departments concerned can do a better job. The country's security is at stake here with the Taliban-trained Mujahideen starting a revolution and robbing banks.

MILF influence abound, the spirit of Intifada blows eastward and the foreign colonisers are just outside our borders and all ready to pounce! Who knows how many more halls and buildings await to be sabotaged in future.
