As expected, the weakest link of the gang, Dr Teng Hock Nam has 'decided' to withdraw from the party contest but not without a big fanfare. According to him, this sacrifice is for the immediate marketing of a multi-racial front for the party's consumption.

A complete 180 degree turn away from the president's dream team. It was strange that the news was announced a day earlier by party adviser Dr Lim Keng Yaik at the Ipoh caucus.

According to sources, the fact is that the party’s powers-that-be think that he is a burden to the ‘team’ though they opportunistically invited him to the caucus. Just a few days ago, he was paraded before the press as a core member of the president's dream team! What a shame.

Since Teng subscribes fully to this grand ideology, he should carry this belief to its logical conclusion. Resign as Penang chairman and offer it to a capable Malay member since the ethnic issue in Penang is far more serious than that in Selangor. This should be the hallmark of a sincere leader.

Now, a three-legged chair of Chinese and Indians is highly unstable. A Machiavellian will be able to get a Malay to form the fourth leg, drawing from the old Alliance strategy. This multi-racial ideology is value adding to the gang for a more potent punch against the individual candidates.

But this sudden sloganeering of multi-racialism in place of the president's dream team makes one think about the question of sincerity and hypocrisy.

If the motive is sincere, it should be done before the president's nomination of his dream team. This sudden about-turn reflects poorly on the president. Race relations were never in the equation in this election. The whole membership knows that race is not an issue at all.

To raise it now is to make a non-problem a problem. This new leadership of a multi-racial alliance is blind. The party accuses Umno of racial politics and insists that it must change, if not ‘we shall leave the BN coalition’.

Now, the same formula is used in our own party all for the sake of just winning the party election against a plethora of weak challengers. This is the most abhorrent Machiavellian chicanery ever orchestrated in an election. We are fast descending into multi-racial hypocrisy.

Multi-racialism is based on tolerance and mutual respect. It believes in the equality of races and it places faith in meritocracy. Everyone should be judged by his or her own performance, ability and wisdom and be elected on their own accord and strengths.

If a race is lacking in our leadership, it happens on its own natural accord, not because there is prejudice. Deliberate attempts to ‘fill up’ a so-called ‘vacancy’ is no different to instituting racial quotas in the party. This multi-racial alliance has no more moral high ground to call on the government to abolish racial quotas.

Gerakan's woes today are the making of Dr Lim Keng Yaik. He groomed leaders through the pet concept of ‘orderly transition’. Before March 8, preliminary ‘testing’ of some leaders yielded positive results like Lee Kar Choon.

But when they were put into the open for the Mar 8 challenge, the real stress levels nearly destroyed the whole party. Quantum theory states that the real test must also include the observer, in this case, the ring leader.

In a press interview, Lim partially blamed Dr Mahathir Mohamad for Gerakan's defeat. He said Mahathir, somehow, don't know how, managed to pull wool over his eyes. He could not see. But Lim pulled the same wool over his protégé and his protégé simply pulled the wool over all our eyes.

We simply went to ‘war’ believing that Anwar was rejected by the Malays despite the ground indicating otherwise. Who should shoulder the complete blame is quite obvious. The individual members sense something amiss. That is the reason why so many of them are now rising up individually to change the status quo.

Alas, they will have first get through the might and awe of this ‘multi-racial alliance’. May good luck be with all of you.
