I refer to the letter Meritocracy is the way to go .

First of all, let's be realistic. I went to a government school in Kuala Lumpur. During my time in Form One, I remember that in the best class of the school, out of more than 40 students, there were only three Malay students and one Indian.

Thus if we were to base intake into universities on meritocracy, Chinese students would easily make up more than 90% of university students.

Meritocracy is successful in a country like Singapore where the Chinese do make up the majority of the population. It is also successful in countries like the UK because it is a fairly homogenous society.

Take for example the classic case of Germany in 1940s when it had a sizeable Jewish population in which the Jews were so dominant and successful that it led to the ‘holocaust’ in which six million Jews were rounded up and executed.

Surely the writer is irresponsible in prescribing a formula which history has proven would only lead to ethnic cleansing.

However one must understand the grievances of the non-Malays. The Indian community in Malaysia are also poor and deserve assistance. Within the bumiputeras as well, the Orang Asli are the poorest and thus should receive the most attention.

Also there is anger and resentment that rich Malays such as those living in wealthy housing estates such as Bangsar, Damansara Heights and Shah Alam are benefitting from the Barisan Nasional's pro-bumiputera policy.

Then there is the issue of the abuse of employees in Malaysia. The abuse of workers at a factory manufacturing Nike sporting goods shows that double standards is part and parcel of Malaysian life.

It is worrying that we are heading towards a society that tolerates the abuse of people as necessary for economic development.

How can we have one policy that gives special, preferential and privileged treatment to one group in Malaysia whilst treating another like slaves without basic human rights? Such policies will only lead to disaster and isolation of Malaysia by the international community.
