I refer to the letter 'The Quran commands so' (Aug 22). I would like to know who the editor of the Quranic translation quoted by Arhasan is. How is it possible for the editor to deduce so much from so little said?

It is mischievous for the editor to include his notes in the translation as to make it appear that the notes are part of the text. The arabic text mentions nothing about the covering of the hair or face or hands. Obviously, what the editor is describing is the traditional dress-code of Saudi Arabia and I conclude that the editor is probably an Arab.

The Quran requires women to be respectable in the eyes of their society where they live and not necessarily in the eyes of an Arab society. There are many tribes in Africa and South-east Asia in which women are half-naked yet considered respectable. The Quran does not describe what constitutes proper attire because the Quran does not belong to one race but serves as a guide to the whole of human race.
