I refer to the Malaysiakini report PM endorses ‘reform minded CJ’.

I captured these strong and powerful phrases delivered by Malaysian Bar president Ambiga Sreenevasan in her welcoming address at the 21st LawAsia Conference, in Kuala Lumpur:

‘…prime minister, I ask you ,on behalf of all right-thinking Malaysians and on behalf of the legal fraternity of Malaysia, to move to abolish the ISA…’

As far as I am concerned, this appeal to abolish ISA that came from Ambiga, who represents more than 13,000 lawyers throughout Malaysia, is the fourth time in this year alone!

I can understand her bravery in mentioning these sensitive phrases out loud in front of the ex- home minister and current prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

She herself has been to the Kamunting camp and met the ISA detainees herself. My husband, a seventh-year ISA detainee, told me Ambiga visited them twice this year alone.

And I’m not surprised with the quick and cruel response of the prime minister that Malaysia still needs the ISA. It is a standard answer by all Umno-BN politicians because without the ISA, their political careers will be completely destroyed.

Despite that cruel and discouraging answer from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, I have to give the thumbs up for the high spirited president of Bar Council when she answered ‘...we vow to keep up the campaign to repeal the ISA’.

As the wife of an ISA detainee who has been detained for a very long time, it’s hard to tell how nuch I have suffered, to see my beloved husband detained without trial for so many years.

Each time I look into my son’s eyes, my heart just shatters thinking about how he has to grow up without the love, care and guidance of his father.

And the worst thing is that the wait is not over yet….

At this present time, I can’t afford to look back on all those years that have been left behind. I have no choice but to move on.

Ambiga, your vow came like magic, telling me to be steadfast and more committed to the anti- ISA campaign.
