Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Heung called for more Chinese youth to join the Malaysian police force as at the moment Chinese Malaysians only account for "three percent of the 87,400-strong force".

As reported in The Sun on Sunday , Chor said that "fewer Chinese are joining the force because there are a lot of job opportunities in other industries".

I'm surprised that an MCA minister can be so out of touch with the very people he has sworn to protect, not that they need his support.

When will Chor and other MCA ministers realise that it is the lack of promotion and career advancement that discourages Chinese Malaysians from joining the police force and not the low pay or lack of other benefits or the better opportunities in other industries?

Malaysia may not yet be a fully developed nation but we have reached a stage of prosperity where all our basic needs have been met. Remuneration is now not of utmost importance to us. Job satisfaction has now become very important. Career advancement is now a more desired form of reward over pay increment.

I call upon MCA ministers like Chor to wake up before a whole generation of Chinese Malaysian youth grow up without them realising it.
