I write in response to Dr N's reaction to the attacks on America in his letter, 'US tragedy: points to ponder' (Sept 12). Whether or not the writer is a medical doctor, I am sure he believes in the sanctity and value of human lives, whoever they may be, regardless of race and religion.

Implicit in his response, however, is an underlying, albeit, understated belief that somehow America deserves this attack. This is precisely the sectarian mindset that is dangerous to begin with. If carried far enough, it justifies the vicious violence circle.

Following the writer's line of reasoning, I say let only the guilty suffer. But these attacks are mindless excesses. I am outraged and indignant as I consider how the loved ones must feel. Have we forgotten our own anguish as we followed closely the Highland Towers tragedy in 1993?

I fail to see what purpose these attacks aim to achieve. To me they are the act of murderous cowards who do not even do justice to the thousands of helpless victims whose lives were prematurely ended.

I echo the words of the commentary of a daily on these attacks: no purpose is high or holy enough for so many innocent people to die for. And I think any human being with even a single atom of decency in him would feel the same.
