Although I support XYZ who wrote the letter 'Disappointed with PM's stand on terrorism' (Oct 2), I wish to add that the writer should be more considerate where the prime minister is concerned. Dr Mahathir Mohamad needs to do something artful.

However, I think it is time Mahathir let go from being overly constrained or sensitive to Muslims' opinions on the ground. The Barisan Nasional has beaten the opposition flat in the recently concluded Sarawak state election. Our economy has recovered, and above all, Mahathir is charismatic and credible enough to take a firm stand against terrorism.

With a stronger Umno and BN now, Mahathir should indeed heed the call and allow the US, UK and Japan armed forces to use our air force and naval bases to attack Afghanistan where Osama bin Laden is being protected. Furthermore, Mahathir should also order our armed forces to join in the global alliance against terrorism to show that Islam promoted by Umno is moderate and does not condone terrorism.

As our armed forces are predominantly Muslims, Malaysia can show our Western allies and Muslims all over the world that the attack on Afghanistan is not about civilisational clashes. The participation of the Malaysian Armed Forces in the Afghanistan campaign against terrorists will also enhance our international image as a moderate Islamic state that is willing to uphold the principle of justice for all. It will also show the world that our armed forces are as advanced, professional and efficient as those in the developed world - Malaysia Boleh!

Malaysians should support Mahathir's firm and resolute decision to assist the West with all it can, including sending our armed forces to fight with our Western allies against terrorists.
