In response to Ahmad Rizal's 'Separation of powers, solution to restore positive perception of Islam' (Oct 18), let me begin with answering his two questions.

1) It is a fact that Islam promotes peace and does not condone evil acts, hence the whole world, including Muslim countries, condemned the WTC and Pentagon bombings. However, to say that Osama is using Islam to justify his alleged act of terrorism is a gross misperception on the part of Rizal.

Firstly there is no concrete evidence to support the allegation that Osama did it. Secondly, Osama is a Muslim, staying in a Muslim country Afghanistan. He should not be implied to be using Islam to justify the act which till now is not proven.

2) Muslims, contrary to Rizal's perception, do not condone acts of terrorism, however, they support Osama because he is not proven guilty of the alleged act. Muslims are brothers, hence, when one is oppressed or unfairly treated, he must be helped. It is also a known fact that Islam is oppressed, e.g., Palestine, and Osama is one of those who champion the cause to free Muslims from oppression. Does he not deserve the support of all Muslims?

To solve the perceived problem of Muslims' failure to understand the Islamic teachings, particularly Muslim leaders' misuse of Islam for support and power, Rizal suggested that there be separation between government and religion. It is worth noting here that our PM who recently declared that Malaysia is an Islamic country even though she does not have the prerequisites to qualify for it, is guilty of using Islam for support and power. Suggesting that Islam and Government be separated is indicative of Rizal's partial understanding of Islam. Even the government, led by Umno, which had been advocating such separation since it came to power, now conceded that politics and Islam are inseparable. Or is this another of the government's or Umno's ploy to gain support to retain power?

Islam is a way of life. It encompasses governance (politics) and religion. Such suggestion, to my mind, should not even be thought of by a Muslim what more be suggested for implementation by an Islamic country, Malaysia.
