One cannot deny the fact that the anti-establishment sentiment on the ground is still against the ruling party after their candidate was defeated by the opposition front. This is the second setback for the ruling party after their humiliating defeat in the first by-election at Permatang Pauh.

By voting for the PAS candidate against his Umno rival, voters in Kuala Terengganu have shown their independence and would not bow to threat by the ruling party. Hooray for that.

If the ruling party, which can make available all it resources and government machinery, cannot win in a by-election after the general elections, one tends to wonder when comes the next polls where their resources will be spread thin, how are they going to defend their seats from the onslaught of an energised oppositions front?.

In the age of Internet, bloggers have more clout with their writings compared with the mainstream media and can influence voters. The ruling party’s tactic of dishing out development projects and money to voters does not work in their favour anymore.

Voters tend to look at the candidates’ personalities and character and candidates which appear to be clean and hardworking will win hands down against their rivals in any by-election from now.

The defeat of the BN candidate against his PAS rival by a bigger majority in KT might be the beginning of the end of the ruling party’ hegemony in this country since independence. The curtain had almost fallen on them earlier in the last general elections and in losing two by-elections after that, the final curtain call might for the ruling party might be sooner rather than later.

BN members of parliament who wanted to jump ship earlier but changed their minds later on might have to rethink their positions after looking at the big defeat in KT. They should seize the golden opportunity to make a difference in this country by jumping from their sinking ship and helping their Pakatan Rakyat partners to form the federal government lead by Anwar Ibrahim .

Malaysians has suffered much due to the ruling party’ lack of good governance. Bad leadership and graft is now like a cancer and has eaten away at public funds meant for the poor and downtrodden to get out of their cycle of poverty besides being for developments of all strata of society.

If the oil-rich state of Terengganu had prudently invested their oil royalty payments from the federal government over the past twenty years, hardcore poor would be a thing of the past in the Turtle state.

But instead there has been lavish spending by the state leaders like on the annual Monsoon Cup yacht regatta, the Crystal Mosque and other big ostentatious projects which do not benefit the locals at all and only make the ruling elite rich by dubious means.

The Malay saying goes tujuh keturunan tak habis makan will describes the wealth of those holding the fort who are enmeshed with corrupt practices.

The result of the KT by-election is a big slap to Najib Abdul Razak who wants to take office come. The deputy premier had spent time and effort to shore up by the BN candidate by making visits here and there but it was an exercise in futility as his candidate lost big.

How can the incoming premier claim that he represents the Malay voice if an Malay-belt area has now rejected his candidate?

Umno has failed to reform after their drubbing in the last polls. The economic scenario, which is not favourable, has further alienated the people from supporting the government. On top of that the coming Umno internal polls, where money politic is openly used, makes a mockery of Umno leaders’ call to have ‘a clean and transparent government which will work in the people’s best interests’.

BN needs to do a lot of soul-searching to regain lost ground. At the rate it is going, it will be hit by a wave of defeats come the next polls as the ground sentiment is against them. Time is running out and no matter what the present, weak government does or say, the people just don’t trust them to turn over a new leaf.

Surely after more than fifty years of ‘raping’ our natural resources and public funds with impunity, the door is finally being shown to the corrupt elite and their days are numbered. First the general elections, then Permatang Pauh and then KT. Come the next polls, BN will be history due to their own making.

Malaysians have finally awoken from their slumber and are not going to allow the present leaders to squander our rich natural resources for personal greed anymore. May the winds of change in KT blow to other parts of this country in order for our younger generation to not to suffer the sins of the present leaders who are corrupt to the core.

Kudos to the KT voters who have shown the way by throwing out the BN candidate who represented the old and tired faces of our leaders who still think that money and development can buy votes. How wrong can they be?
