Azaman's letter ("Thai province bans tight attire, Cambodia goes 'dry'", Nov 26) stating that authorities in Udorn Thani province of Thailand have decided to pass a law that fines women "who wear revealing and tight clothing on the ground that it has led to crimes against women" amazed me - a Thai woman.

In Thailand, passing a law is not the job of local authorities who are civil servants. It is the job of the elected parliament.

The Thai Constitution guarantees basic human rights, which I believe, includes the right to wear what we choose. Punishing women on their choice of clothes on grounds that it provokes lust is a human rights violation. I am sure that women rights groups in my country won't take this sitting down.

Also, it is a fallacy that sexy clothing invites rape. Women are raped even in their most conservative clothing.
