I am afraid Siva Subramaniam ("Smoking, gambling, drinking are not 'rights'", Dec1) has missed the point when he argued that EPF should stay away from investing in companies involved in smoking, drinking and gambling activities.

I admit these activities are not conducive - I do not indulge in any one of it. However, if the writer, or the PAS MP Mahfuz Omar who made the first call for that matter, is so concerned about these activities, then they should also request the government to ban these companies from operating.

As long as these companies conduct activities legally sanctioned by the government and pay their corporate taxes, it is highly dubious to call for EPF to stop their dealings with them. This is a hypocritical stand, pandering to the interest of a group of people who are slowly but surely turning this country into a religious state.

I sincerely hope the EPF board will find ways to increase its yearly dividends and not get involved in mindless politics.
