Keep sinful companies in check to stem rot in youth
I follow the debate on EPF's investment in tobacco, gaming and alcohol companies in malaysiakini with great interest. Teacher Rohana Hashim ('Dismayed by Kit Siang's statement', Dec 3) made a good point - there is indeed a grave concern in the teaching profession that our children and youth are increasingly exposed to bad habits and unhealthy lifestyles.
Let us set aside our political differences and support the move to discourage (though not totally ban) the activities of those 'sinful' companies. We should further legislate to explicitly disallow their advertisements, directly or indirectly. By the way, why are they allowed to advertise, but lawyers aren't?
Most importantly, I hope DAP national chairperson, Lim Kit Siang would come out with a clear-cut and direct statement to support the withdrawal of EPF's investments in those concerns. Otherwise, I still think that teacher Rohana Hashim is right.
