I refer to the Malaysiakini report 'OK for Umno to rally, not Hindraf' .

I used to hold the police force in high esteem, partly because my late father was a faithful policeman and until he got seriously ill, I used to admire him for his loyalty to the police force and the nation long after he retired.

In fact, I remember very vividly how he defended the then IGP, Rahim Noor, over his then alleged assault of Anwar Ibrahim, during one of our conversation on current affairs.

But I also have had the unique experience of witnessing how the Umno unleash the thugs and gangsters on innocent people wishing to express their unhappiness over decisions or actions of the so-called law-makers.

In one such incident, a group of residents made up largely housewives and children, staged a peaceful demonstration to protesting the building of an illegal Muslim cemetery in Kota Damansara.

Umno then sent drug addicts and Mat Rempit to harass and threaten the residents. Strangely there were no policeman present and despite calls to the police, they never came.

Do we accuse the police for their double standards? But the police should not be the target simply because they answer to the powers-that-be and surely we know who they are. Umno. Who is the home minister? An Umno vice-president aspirant.

The police are caught between doing what is right and what is ‘might’. Well-trained in taking orders and answering to their ‘bosses’, they will never be able to do their jobs without fear or favour.

This is not unique to Malaysia and history has shown that this has happened everywhere else in the world, largely driven by powerful and corrupt governments.

Do we have a solution? Fortunately, yes and that is our god-given right to ‘choose’. We are not animals who cannot think and Malaysian have shown in the last elections that the local media have absolutely no influence on our decision-making.

The local media is a good source for laughter for it is amazing how they treat the citizens of Malaysia. I suppose the reporters are also like the police, forced on to write the kind of garbage we read these days.

The only people who raise or incite racial disharmony are Umno. Everyone knows that and everyone therefore has a responsibility to act and chose their leaders. So far, all by-elections have gone to the opposition. I suppose Malaysians need to be patient for the next general elections and the days of Umno, MCA and MIC are but numbered.

I have some sentiments for Gerakan simply because they preach non race-based politics and I seriously hope they will join forces with PKR, who have similar ideology. Combined, they will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

Gerakan have some of the brightest brains in the country and PKR are lacking them. In the last elections, the latter were faced with a shortage of able leaders.

Come on Gerakan, your future lies not with corrupt leaders of Umno, MCA and MIC but with leaders whom people want to see lead the country to greater heights.

Let Umno rot in their corruption and corrupt leaders. If the people in Malaysia do not act soon, we will soon see the son of an Indonesion Immigrant on the road to becoming our next PM. What a thought.
