Many opinions have been expressed on the EPF's investments in halal and non-halal stocks. I feel that the debate misses the point, for I believe that the EPF should not even invest in the stock market.

The EPF was established for a very specific objective, which, according to the EPF website, is to "provide retirement benefits for members through (the) management of their savings in an efficient and reliable manner".

It is to ensure that Malaysians have at least some form of savings to draw upon once they retire.

For most of us, our EPF savings will form much, if not all, of what we have when the day comes to call it quits.

If we had a choice, would any of us 'invest' these savings in the unpredictable and risky stock market? I seriously doubt it.
