MIC president S Samy Vellu today issued a stern warning against the press for speculating on a police probe into alleged financial improprieties involving a party-run university.

samy vellu pc 120308 stern “I regret the actions of some news organisations for deliberately harping on the so-called cost overruns of the AIMST University,” said Samy Vellu in a statement today.

“I have been very patient all this while, but if any party continues to make further insinuations on this, it will only lead to the MIC, MIED, AIMST University and myself to exercise the litigation process,” he added.

Maju Institute of Education Development or MIED, the education arm of MIC, runs the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology or AIMST.

Samy Vellu was referring to press reports today and yesterday, claiming that he was quizzed by police at the Federal Commercial Crimes Investigation Department (CCID) headquarters.

Denied any wrongdoings

Several news reports had speculated that he was probed in connection to alleged cost overruns involving the construction of AIMST.

In clarification, Samy Vellu said that police officers took his statements yesterday at the MIC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and he did not go to the CCID headquarters as reported.

He added that the police recorded statements over MIED CEO P Chitrakala’s police report regarding the RM2 million Sri Lankan Tsunami Fund.

Samy Vellu also denied any wrongdoings regarding the fund.

“I have already issued a press statement on the tsunami fund and even told the press through a press statement that we are willing to let them to see for themselves the receipts of the fixed deposit of the fund,“ he said.
