A former deputy vice-chancellor in a local university was today charged with forgery with the intention to renew his contract at the Klang Sessions Court.

Dr Rustam Abbas Prof Dr Rustam Abbas, previously from the Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel), was accused of dishonestly using as genuine a document to seek an extension to his contract as the deputy vice-chancellor.

The charge sheet stated that Rustam, 41, had used the letter dated Dec 28, 2006 although he had reason to believe to be a forged document.

Rustam claimed trial to the charge.

He is alleged to have committed the offence at Unisel Human Resources Division Office, Bestari Jaya Campus, Kuala Selangor, on July 12, 2007.

The charge under Section 471 of the Penal Code carries up to two years' jail or a fine or both upon conviction.
