Former Labuan parliamentarian Suhaili Abdul Rahman has today pleaded not guilty to cheating a businessman of making a false declaration before a Justice of Peace in 1995.

This is the second charge faced by the embattled politician after he was yesterday accused in court of using a fake identity card to secure a bank loan.

suhaili abdul rahman Among others, Suhaili, who was also Labuan Corporation chief, was alleged to have used a fake identity card to secure a loan of RM110,000 and an overdraft of RM50,000 to purchase a piece of property.

He had also allegedly used the fake MyKad to register his firm, Saraequity Sdn Bhd, with the Companies Commission Malaysia (CCM).

According to the prosecution, Suhaili had used a fake identity card with the name 'Ahmad Suhaili Abdul Rahman' to sign a document as a guarantor to convince Malayan Bank manager Ismail Jantan to approve the loan application for his company, Saraequity.

The matter was reported by Malaysiakini two years ago, when a police report was lodged by the businessman.

Sessions Court judge Caroline Bee Majani had yesterday set bail at RM20,000, with RM3,000 deposited in one surety. Hearing for the case will be over five days from Feb 8 to 12 next year.

Said to be Labuan ‘strongman’

Suhaili was to be reappointed as chairperson of development planning agency Labuan Corporation this week after his contract ended on March 31 but this has been thrown into doubt by the two cases.

Suhaili, who is seen as a strongman in the island just off of Sabah, has been accused of a number of wrongdoings over a period of many years.

Last year, he was also alleged to have abused his position as a parliamentarian to close down a popular restaurant that he had wanted to take over.

Suhaili, who has been Labuan MP for seven years, was not pick to defend his seat in the 2008 general elections.

He has repeatedly argued that the accusations came from his political rivals who are out to remove him.

Apart from legal woes, Suhaili has also had his fair share of personal tragedy.

His wife died last October after being in a coma for 10 months due to complications after undergoing a tummy tuck, liposuction and surgery for eye bags.
