The drama in PPP which has been peppered by death threats and expulsions saw another twist today with several of the party's Federal Territory exco members calling for a motion of no- confidence to be moved against president M Kayveas.

They also want members attending the party's FT convention tomorrow to move a similar motion against PPP FT chief A Chandrakumanan.

Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, PPP FT information chief R Rajendra and Deputy Youth Chief Mohd Latif Yusof raised the threat of party branches in Kuala Lumpur being de-registered as checks with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) showed that their records have not been updated since 2002.

ppp party pc 200509 01 They also questioned Kayveas' branch membership at Tupai Lane (Taiping) for which records have not been updated with the ROS since 2006 with the branch now being threatened with temporary suspension.

"Kayveas maybe the only BN component party president whose branch is on the brink of being suspended and he still wants to continue leading the party.

"I think we have had enough of Kayveas' leadership. It is time for new blood and we voice our support for Senator (T) Murugiah who has been doing a good job as a deputy minister," Rajendra said.

Murugiah, who has been embroiled in a feud with the president, was recently sacked by the PPP supreme council.

Rajendra also asked for the ROS' intervention to investigate Kayveas' actions in ordering the expulsion as he claimed it was against the party's constitution and ROS regulations.

Records not updated claim

He said he and several Federal Territory exco members were prepared to face the consequences of their action in holding today's press conference and were prepared to face the sack.

"For this reason, we do not want to go to tomorrow's FT convention but want the members there to move such a motion.

"Let the truth be told that a majority of PPP's FT branches' records have not been updated with the ROS, some since 2002. Hence, there are questions of the legality of Chandrakumanan holding his post," he said.

The exposure of the possible threat of the de-registration of a host of PPP FT branches was previously made by sacked PPP supreme council member Dr NA Shanmuganathan. Besides FT, the majority of PPP branches are in Selangor and Perak.

Shanmuganathan was present at today's press conference along with M Jeyaratnam, PPP's Brickfields Utara branch chief.

Jeyaratnam said he had over the years handed all the branch's AGM records to Chandrakumanan in the latter's capacity as PPP's FT chief.

kayveas ppp pc 120308 anguish "But until today I cannot open a bank account for my branch and the reason is because of our records have not been updated with the ROS.

"I believe many PPP branches are facing a similar predicament and that is why we are calling for a no-confidence motion against Chandrakumanan," he said.

Shanmuganathan, meanwhile, raised doubts on Kayveas' ( left ) own party membership as he claimed that the PPP Maharajalela branch and La Chateau branch which Kayveas claimed membership of have been suspended.

"Hence, he seems to be holding the PPP president's post illegally due to suspension of the branches over the years including at Tupai Lane (Taiping)."

Rajendra, who claims to have the support of the majority of the PPP FT exco members, questioned why Murugiah had been punished with expulsion despite excelling in his role as deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

‘Desperate in his attempts'

"PPP's constitution states that members should serve the people and we feel that by Murugiah rendering efficient service to the people, he is also helping the party," the PPP FT information chief said.

"Let me remind Kayveas it is the prerogative of the prime minister to appoint Murugiah and he (Kayveas) should not make threats much like being above the PM."

Kayveas had said before this that Murugiah's expulsion was the result of the latter's ‘greed and power-craziness of a so-called popular leader'.

Speculation is rife that Murugiah is trying to capitalise on his newfound fame to topple Kayveas in the June 7 party polls.

Chandrakumanan, in an immediate reaction, claimed Rajendra had no locus standi to call for the press conference.

"This further goes to show that Murugiah is desperate in his attempts to gain support from every state through this illegal tactic of abusing the power and the machinery of the office of the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's office."

Chandrakumanan called on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to look into this alleged abuse of power by Murugiah.

Chandrakumanan also described as ‘bogus' the group claiming to represent the PPP FT exco at Rajendra's press conference pointing out the only one present from the exco was Rajendra.
