Senator T Murugiah, who was elected by his supporters yesterday as the PPP ‘president', today faced open revolt when the Selangor party leadership lodged a police report against him.

The report was made at the Shah Alam district police headquarters by state leader Maglin D'Cruz.

maglin dcruz ppp 140509 D'Cruz ( right ), also the PPP vice-president, said that the report was lodged against Murugiah for allegedly conducting an illegal extraordinary general meeting (EGM) in Putrajaya yesterday.

He told reporters that the EGM was invalid as it was held without informing the party's secretary-general.

"The so-called delegates, who 'elected' Murugiah as the new PPP president, included those who had been suspended and expelled from the party.

"Furthermore, Murugiah's own party branch had been de-registered by Registrar of Societies. How could someone become PPP president if he doesn't have any branch?" asked D'Cruz, according to a Bernama report.

At yesterday's meeting, some 1,760 delegates from 778 PPP branches ‘elected' Murugiah as the new PPP president despite the fact that he had been sacked by the party.

Murugiah is involved in a bitter battle with party president M Kayveas. His position as the deputy minister in the PM's department is also in jeopardy if he has no party backing.

Kayveas is believed to have lined up D'Cruz to replace Murugiah in the government.

Another report in Johor

D'Cruz also told reporters that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should take action against Murugiah for misusing the Prime Minister's Department premises purportedly for a "meet-the-people" event.

A similar police report was also lodged in Johor by the state's PPP Youth chief Jamaludin Ghulamhan.

"How could delegates from 13 divisions in Johor have attended the EGM when 19 of

24 divisions attended the Johor PPP convention here yesterday," he asked.

Murugiah also faced pressure from Perak when the state's party chief Lee Heng urged him to resign as deputy minister as he was appointed to the post on the party's ticket.

Lee, in a Bernama report, said Murugiah had misused his position to apply for a permit to conduct a seminar in Putrajaya but instead turned it into political event.

"He had defied the party by calling for the EGM," he added.

And in Seremban, the state PPP chief Sahul Hameed Shaikh Mohaideen asked Najib to take immediate action to resolve the crisis.
