Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) Youth Chief T Murugiah who recently entered into the lioness' den with a controversial polygamy call will be issued a show-cause letter by the party.

PPP president M Kayveas said the partys supreme council, at a meeting today, rejected Murugiahs stand and will give him 30 days to reply the letter.

Failing which, Kayveas was quoted by Bernama as saying, action will be taken against Murugiah. Suspension was not ruled out.

Last December, at a party joint-convention, Murugiah had called on the government to permit non-Muslim men to practise polygamy in order to eliminate social problems.

The Youth chiefs solution was met with ferocious criticism from womens organisations and other quarters.

Kayveas said the partys supreme council had studied Murugiahs speech text and found that his proposal did not reflect the partys stand on the issue.

The party rejects polygamy, stressed Kayveas who is also deputy housing and local government minister.

Commenting on Murugiahs reported intention to step down as Youth chief, Kavyeas said: It's not our intention to punish him but we want him to explain on the issue.

Stop condemning

The PPP leader also asked other Barisan Nasional component parties not to harp on the issue and not to condemn the party.

"It is not a unanimous decision of the party, don't condemn us," he said.

Kayveas claimed since Murugiahs controversial speech, there has been an increase in attention and assistance given to single mothers and illegitimate children by the Women and Family Development Ministry and the National Unity and Social Development Ministry

The deputy minister also said party wings have been directed to check their facts before issuing statements.

"There is no gag order but if the leaders feel uncomfortable about certain issues then they will have to get advice from the supreme council or the president, he said.
