Gerakan's central working committee (CWC) has decided to issue a show-cause letter to its rebellious vice-president Huan Cheng Guan.

The vice-president, who expressed dissatisfaction with the top leadership, also said that he would resign and hinted about the possibility of joining the opposition.

In a statement today, Gerakan secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow said the CWC views the matter seriously.

"While respecting Huan's right to express his views, the CWC viewed his recent media statements, particularly those ridiculing the party in the vernacular press as having gone overboard and had badly tarnished the party's image.

"His action had caused dissension and division in the party, which is unacceptable to the CWC," he added.

As such, Teng said, the CWC had decided that disciplinary action be instituted against him, in accordance to the provisions of the party's constitution.

"A show cause letter will be issued to him, which he has to reply within 14 days. The CWC also issued reminders to all members to observe strict discipline and protect the image of the party at all times.

"All disagreements or criticisms should be conveyed through the proper party channels and not through the media," he added.

These decisions were reached during a CWC meeting yesterday.

Teng also said the party headquarters has yet to receive Huan's notification of resignation.

He added that the party constitution requires a member who wished to resign to give a 30-day notice in writing to his branch secretary and copy to the CWC through the secretary-general.

In an immediate reaction, Huan said he has not received any show-cause letter as yet. "I will give my explanation after receiving the letter," he added.

On the accusation that he had ridiculed the party, Huan replied: "This depends on people’s interpretations."

"If you have not done anything wrong, why are you afraid of criticism?" he asked.
