MIC will be monitoring the intake of local public universities for this year to ensure a fair and equitable selection process, said party secretary-general Dr S Subramaniam today.

He said although the selection process was based on merit, there was a need to monitor it so that no deserving student would feel he or she has been left out.

"MIC has been doing this (monitoring) for the past few years and we have taken up many of the appeal cases to the attention of the government with some degree of success," he said in a statement.

dr s subramaniam interview 210308 05 Subramaniam said in the past, many students, despite having good grades, have complained that they were not successful in getting a place in the local public universities.

"There have also been cases that many had their application to do a particular course rejected although they have the grades," he said.

He said MIC would ensure that its proposals on the university intake were implemented, which include requesting more places for Indian students to do critical courses such as medicine, engineering, dentistry and law.

Subramaniam said the intake of local public universities was scheduled to be announced on June 19.

He urged applicants to check their status via telephone at 03-8883 5848 or 03-8883 5858; or through the website at upu.mohe.gov.my; ipt.utm.my or jpt.uum.edu.my. Alternatively, they can check via the SMS by typing UPU RESULT (I/C number) and send to 15888.

He also said unsuccessful applicants were advised to appeal by submitting their appeal via the e-Rayuan application to Bahagian Pengerusan Kemasukan Pelajar, Jabatan Pengajian Tinggi within 10 working days after the announcement of the intake results.

The minister said a copy of their appeal should be sent to the Office of the Human Resources Minister, Level 9, Block D3, Complex D, Prescient 1, 62530 Putrajaya and the educational arm of the MIC, the Maju Institute for Education Development (MIED) at Level 1, Menara Manickavasagam (MIC headquarters), No. 1, Jalan Rahmat, off Jalan Ipoh, 50350 Kuala Lumpur.

Subramaniam also welcomes the announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin that the intake into the teacher training institutes will be increased.

"This would give more opportunities for Indians to join the teaching profession and at the same time allow them to secure a diploma or a degree in teaching," he added.
