Now that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) has clarified the status of PPP leadership, party president M Kayveas today said that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will be attending the party's annual meeting this Sunday.

kayveas hq pc 050609 Speaking at a press conference at the party's headquarters in Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur, Kayveas said that the prime minister's office has confirmed that the premier will be officiating the meeting on Sunday.

"It is confirmed that as the Barisan Nasional chair, the prime minister would stick to the tradition of officiating the AGM of a component party," said Kayveas, adding that this was Najib's first since taking over as prime minister.

The party has received a written confirmation from the Prime Minister's Office that Najib would be attending the Sunday meet.

Previously Najib had said that he was unsure if he should attend the meeting as there was an ongoing dispute over the party presidency.

ROS letter to BN sec-gen

However, in a press statement late yesterday, ROS chief registrar Md Alias Kalil said that Kayveas was PPP's legitimate president for now pending investigations over a dispute filed by supporters of T Murugiah.

As the new party 'president', Murugiah ordered for the June 7 AGM to be cancelled given that an EGM had just been held.

During the press conference today, Kayveas also revealed a letter from the ROS to BN secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor dated June 4, which stated that the ROS had no objections to the June 7 AGM.

However, the letter, which was distributed to the press, also stated that the ROS was still probing complaints filed about PPP's internal problems and until that is resolved, Kayveas was still the legitimate party president.

Kayveas won the post unopposed when nominations closed on May 30. He has held the post since 1993.

Muhyiddin: Respect the ROS decision

Meanwhile, in another development, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today urged all parties to respect the ROS' decision to recognise Kayveas as the president for now.

"We will stick to the ROS decision. This is not a political issue but one that involves the law," he told reporters in Sabah.

When asked if PPP should continue with their AGM, Muhyiddin said: "It is PPP's rights to hold its AGM."

"However, that does mean PPP's problems are over," he said, as reported by Bernama .
