Nasharuddin Mat Isa’s victory in retaining his deputy president post comes as no surprise to many PAS delegates. Malaysiakini talks to some of them.

I’ve expected Nasha to win. The division between the ulama and the Erdogan is not exactly true. I am an engineer but I still work with the ulama. I also don’t see the need (for PAS) to be with Umno. Why should we turn our backs to Pakatan?

I wasn’t so surprise with the results. When you stand for election, you will either win or lose. No matter who is picked, I am confident that they will fight for the cause of Islam.

As to the unity government talks, I personally feel that it will be difficult (for PAS) to be with Umno. We should support Pakatan Rakyat and work out the problems between the component parties. The PAS leadership should support Pakatan as well.

I am not surprise that Nasharuddin has won. We from Penang are his staunch supporters. There is no such division between the ulama and the professionals. Whatever it is, these leaders have been elected, they will need to sort things out.

Whoever wins, we follow. We in PAS will follow the decision made at the muktamar. We follow whatever the majority says.

We support the call by our mursyidul am (Nik Abd Aziz Nik Mat) to stick with Pakatan Rakyat. We can’t trust Umno. They are rotten.

Hissamuddin Bakri from Ulu Terengganu, Terengganu

I’ve expected Nashruddin to win. Whatever party differences can be sorted by the religious council (majlis syurah). The ulama-Erdogan division has been twisted by party outsiders. I don’t buy that argument. I’m okay with Pakatan but if the syurah decides otherwise, I will accept.
