The government must take a pragmatic and realistic approach if it is serious in uniting all Malaysians under the 1Malaysia concept as proposed by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"The inequity of sharing the nation's wealth among all the various races is one of the main reasons why Malaysians are divided and there is frustration among the youth leading to social problems," said Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming today.

"The federal government must walk the talk and practise what they preach, eradicate all racial discrimination and give equal treatment in the education field and job opportunities for all Malaysians," he added.

He said that Najib's all-uniting concept will be rendered meaningless if the wide disparity between the rich and poor was not addressed properly.

"They have failed to address the core problems that is facing Malaysians especially the youth," added that state DAP secretary and Pantai Remis assemblyperson ( photo ).

He said that the racial trigger-point will only continue to smoulder endlessly unless the causes for the racial clashes were analysed in their proper prospective and proper solutions are found.

Parents to be blamed

The DAP leader was commenting on the Monday incident in Kamunting that saw two groups clashing over alleged motorbike parts theft which snowballed into innocent bystanders getting victimised in the clash.

The incident left 16 victims in Taiping General Hospital with two admitted in serious condition in the ICU ward.

kamunting_clash_09062009 Kamunting Umno assemblyperson Mohd Zahir Abdul Khalid meanwhile blamed parents for not keeping a proper check on their children who in turn got involved in alcoholism, drug addiction and the mat rempit menace.

"The parents must play their role in moulding their off-springs into responsible citizens and keeping track of their social activities," said Zahir who is also state exco member for education, higher education, human resources, science and technology.

"The moulding of the youth should start from the family instead of them sub-contracting the responsibility to other people," he added.

Meanwhile state chairperson for Indian affairs P Veerasingam said that youths should not take the law into their own hands when confronted with problems.

He said they should instead seek the advise of their political leaders and the police for guidance.

"They should be rational in their thinking and respect for other races and cultures and they should not succumb to instigations by undesirable elements out to disrupt the racial harmony in the country," he added.
