It is taboo to speak at DAP dinner functions as otherwise it will leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Police will swiftly dislodged diners if they breech a specific condition attached to permits for DAP functions, as recent events proved.

Participants are only be allowed to eat and drink, but attempt to make a speech and the police will break up the event in no time.

"We applied for police permits to hold dinner functions in Kuala Kangsar, Teluk Intan and Bidor on June 27, and another one in Ipoh the next day," Nga told Malaysiakini.

Respect fundamental rights

When asked if the permits were approved, Nga, with a voice tinged with sarcasm, said: "Oh, yes the police were very kind in approving our permits but only to eat, drink and not to speak."

He quickly turned serious: "The police must respect the fundamental rights of all Malaysian as enshrined in the Federal Constitution. This is not a police state for them to abuse the people."

"The permit is equivalent to treating citizens of Perak like animals in the Taiping zoo - as animals can't talk but only eat and drink," said Nga.

"The action by the local police is another blotch on the already blemished record of the Royal Malaysian Police Force.

"It is an open infringement of Article 10 of the Federal Constitution which guarantees freedom of speech and peaceful assembly," Nga added.

In relating the incident at DAP's dinner in Klang, Nga said: "We had expected about 1,500 guests to turn up but the response was overwhelming.

"The figure doubled due to the party's popularity. However, the excuse given by the Selangor police for cancelling the function was that there were too many people for their liking."

On another matter, Nga said that DAP's Yew Tian Hoe who was assaulted with a pepper spray by former DAP Jelapang assemblywoman Hee Yit Foong (left) in the June 7 state assembly sitting, will be filing a suit on Friday at the High Court for battery and assault.

"The Aulong assemblyman will file the suit at 11am at the Ipoh High Court seeking damages, costs and an injunction against Yee from further assaulting Yew," he added.
