PKR's Padang Serai member of parliament N Gobalakrishnan received death threats via two SMSes last night and wants the police to investigate the matter thoroughly.

gobala show death threat 010709 01 He said that the death threats were delivered through the two SMSes which was sent to his mobile phone at 12.47am and 6.48am.

"This can't be prank SMSes as the person repeated the threat," he told reporters.

He is currently staying in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur to attend the Parliament sitting.

He added that this is the first time he has received death threats.

"I don't know who sent them but I want the police to investigate this matter with urgency," he said.

The police came to Parliament to take a report from Gobalakrishnan, who is also a PKR supreme council member.

The first SMS warned Gobalakrishan that the sender knows his official vehicle and wants to shoot the MP.

Home Minister gives assurance

The SMS also made reference to the professional hit job on former Lunas state representative Joe Fernandez in November 2000.

The second SMS repeated the threat and warned Gobalakrishnan against going to the police over the threats. The SMS also made disparaging remarks about PKR.

Gobalakrishnan said he was taking the matter seriously and repeated his call for the police to find the culprit.

"They should guarantee my safety if they don't want any more by-elections," he added.

In a related development, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the police will take the necessary action.

"I have given him a personal guarantee that action will be taken to ensure his safety," he told reporters in Parliament.

"We need to make sure that such instances do not become a general trend," he added.
