Separate allegations of molest and an apparently racially-motivated clash have emerged from a National Service (NS) camp in Cini, near Kuantan in Pahang.

Also present was Tian Chua, her PKR counterpart for Batu.

She said the incidents involved the alleged molest of a female trainee by 20 male trainees on June 23, and a fight among 100 trainees four days later.

Fuziah said the female trainee was at a phone booth at night, when she was molested. Although a police report was lodged, the complainant could not identify the perpetrators.

The camp authorities gave her three days off, but insisted that she reports back by today. She had wanted more time away, to get over the trauma.

national service cini camp trainees negligence complaint 010709 02 On the second incident, Fuziah said the 100 trainees were arranging furniture in the camp canteen under the supervision of a trainer.

A fight broke out - the trainer was unable to control and was, in fact, beaten up himself.

Pekan police detained 17 of the trainees but they were released on June 29. Their parents were allowed to visit them while they were in custody.

Five of the trainees have since been given time off by the camp authorities.

Cover up at camp?

While Fuziah claimed that the fight was due to a racial clash, she did not elaborate.

Instead, she said a greater cause for concern among parents is that there are not enough trainers to ensure security at the camp.

The injured trainer has refused to say anything, she claimed, indicating that the camp authorities are trying to cover up the matter.

najib tun razak She also took a swipe at Prime Minister and Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak (left) , saying: “Camp Cini is in his constituency.

"It should have been easier for the complainants to obtain assistance there. But they had to come to Kuantan, my constituency, which is next to Pekan (for help).”

Fuziah said she would take up the incidents with the National Service Council which answers to the Defence Ministry.

Both she and Chua suggested that the NS scheme be scrapped or suspended until the shortcomings are addressed and the safety of trainees is guaranteed.
