The latest crisis in the Kedah PAS-led administration clearly indicates that PAS is heading in the wrong direction, said Umno supreme council member Rais Yatim.

"We had a good opportunity to have unity talks, but Nik Aziz (PAS spiritual leader) preferred to be with DAP... what happened in Kedah clearly shows that the party can't work with their allies," he said.

Yesterday, Pakatan Rakyat coalition was left in reeling after the Kedah DAP decided to quit the PAS-led administration which was formed slightly more than a year ago.

Kedah DAP's decision was related to the demolishment of the sole pig abattoir in the Malay-majority state headed by Azizan Abdul Razak, a menteri besar from PAS.

rais yatim pc 020709 02 Rais who is also the Minister for Information, Communications and Culture could not resist taking a dig at Nik Aziz for opposing unity talks with Umno.

"The crisis in Kedah is a signal that Nik Aziz has failed because he preferred to talk to DAP rather than the Muslims in Umno,” Rais.

Rais said this was the best time for PAS to make amends by offering the olive branch to Umno so as create a new avenue or platform to lead the Kedah administration.

"Umno (Youth) itself has joined hands with the PAS youth by having intellectual talks , so we have to accept the fact that it is important for Malaysian leaders to unite," said Rais.

Pakatan a ‘fragile coalition'

Even if DAP decides to re-join the PAS-led government after this, Rais argued that it would be a fragile coalition.

"Based on experience, there is a possibility that DAP would return to the Pakatan fold. If it even happens, the coalition would be very fragile and their principles are questionable," he said.

Rais also said that the Pakatan coalition cannot last as they subscribed to different principles and DAP only joined them just for "marriage of convenience".

"The unity that exists among them is only temporary which is to topple the federal government and not to fight for the Malaysians.

"We were very frustrated when Nik Aziz rejected the unity talks but now the political development in Kedah has gone to show that DAP is not a friend who wants to build Malaysia together," he said.
